Mt Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia

Sunrise in Senaru. Today I begin my 4 day trek of Mt Rinjani.

I can see the peak of Rinjani across the road from my hotel. It is the highest point of the rim of a volcano.

The hike begins through field and forest. A brush fire has been filling the air with smoke all morning.

After a hard days walk I reach the crater rim which is covered with cloud. Suddenly the clouds part and the peak can be seen.

I get up at 2am to go to the summit. Dawn breaks long before I reach the summit.

The red glow of the brush fire can be seen far bellow.

Half way to the summit. Above the clouds, above the sea.

I look down to the crater - the volcano within the lake within the volcano.

The sunrise begins in earnest.

Glorious.

Magnificent.

Radiant.

The crater rim casts a shadow on the clouds.

It's full bright daylight by the time I reach the top.

The descent from the summit back to the rim doesn't take so long. The descent to the lake takes hours and I'm exhausted.

Hot springs create a deliciously relaxing bath no far from my camp by the lake.

The next day is a painful aching walk up to the rim and out of the crater.

Water from cloud mist condenses on pine needles and drips onto the ground below. It is like it only rains under the trees.

An accidental movement while the shutter was open created the interesting circular pattern in this picture.

My last day's walk only takes 3 hours. Although my photos have captured some of the beauty of the walk, I am sorry to say there is a disgraceful amount of rubbish along the trail - the worst I have seen on any trail anywhere in the world.
